Description

[FLAGS-CIVIL WAR]. 7-star American parade flag. Ca 1861-1890s.

3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. printed gauze flag, with central star surrounded by a circle of 6 stars, attached to original stick. Framed, 16 x 12 in. overall. Ca 1861-1890s.

Production of flags such as this example began at the start of the Civil War in support of the states seceding from the Union. The flags were northern made and likely sent south before Fort Sumter. Although lacking accompanying provenance, it is possible that this flag was used by a Confederate sympathizer.

Provenance: Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Condition
Light edge wear to flag, otherwise very good. Not examined outside of frame.
